On October the 27th, 1953, Basil Pheloung and Neville Pearson opened Bradfords of Broadway Home Furnishers, on Broadway, Newmarket.
On October the 27th, 1953, Basil Pheloung and Neville Pearson, proudly unlocked the doors to their new venture; Bradfords of Broadway Home Furnishers, nestled on the bustling Broadway street in the centre of Newmarket.
Amidst the exciting atmosphere of Auckland in the 1950s, Basil and Neville made a bold move that would prove to be the start of something great. Despite the risks, they had a gut feeling that New Zealanders were craving something new, and they were determined to provide just that. And, as it turned out, they were absolutely right. Bradfords quickly won the hearts of a diverse range of Kiwis, solidifying their place as a go-to destination for those seeking cutting-edge design and unparalleled quality.
Bradfords had something for everyone, from lounge and bedroom suites to dining tables, bedding, curtains, linen and even lamps, rugs and fire screens (a very important item then).
This extensive range provided a unique opportunity for collaboration, allowing Bradfords to work closely with their customers to create bespoke solutions tailored to their individual needs and lifestyles. In this way, Bradfords stood apart, providing not just furniture, but a personalised experience that inspired customers to live their life, their way.
In the early 1970s, Basil’s tragic passing away brought to the company his wife, Beverley and their eldest son Mark. Under their guidance, the company continued to evolve, embracing new directions that reflected the changing times. Being a fashion leader, the company swung through the sixties, went paisley in the seventies and then grew shoulder pads in the eighties.
In the early 1990s, just as the company started to outgrow the Newmarket site, Neville passed the torch to the next generation and retired. The company made their new home in the Bradfords Centre, in Greenlane. This new chapter marked a significant milestone in the company’s history, providing the space and resources necessary to continue growing.
